Will Examine Opportunities for Textiles and Advanced Materials in South Carolina

Summerville, SC - SCRA Vice President Marty Ryan will be the featured speaker at this evening's EngenuitySC Science Café event. Ryan will discuss "A Textile Opportunity for South Carolina" on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 6:00-7:30pm at Speakeasy in Five Points.

The presentation will review the state's traditional textile manufacturing history and where future opportunities may be. Some examples include fabric that reacts to the environment for responsive camouflage, tents and garments that act as antennae to improve communications, materials that collect and store energy so that the clothes we wear will act as batteries and clothing that will monitor the wearer's vital signs, warn of danger and signal for help.

As the Advanced Materials Division lead at SCRA, Ryan is responsible for all Advanced Material programs at SCRA. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Composites Manufacturing Technology Center.

EngenuitySC is a public-private partnership focused on enhancing the Midlands economic competitiveness and prosperity. The organization hosts a Science Café that meets the second Tuesday of every month to discuss the latest ideas in science and technology in a free-form, non-traditional academic context.
